Chakras of the human body (Part 2): Manipura and Anahata

Among various concepts and ideas of physiology and psychic centres that emerged across Indian traditions, there is also this belief that human body simultaneously exists in two parallel dimensions, in which one is the physical body or “STHULA SARIRA” and the other one is the non-physical, physiological, emotional mind or “SUKSHAMA SARIRA” or “subtle body”. Accordingly, it is also believed that the psyche or the mind interacts with the physical body and both mind and body mutually affect each other. The “subtle body” consists of nadi (energy channels) which are connected by nodes of psychic energy called “chakras”.

Moving further with the knowledge of Chakras and their effects on the human body, we will be elaborating a bit more on the third and fourth Chakra (starting from the base of the spine) i.e. Manipura or Solar Plexus and Anahata or the Heart Chakra respectively.

  1. Manipura or the Solar Plexus: Represented by the element of fire and the colour yellow this chakra is located at the stomach area or the level of the umbilicus.

The seed Mantra for this chakra is RAM.

This chakra influences our upper abdominal functions as the stomach and small intestines and the adrenals, liver and kidneys. Manipura Chakra is related to our self-esteem, confidence, our intelligence, productivity and concentration as well. It also governs our ego.

A blocked Solar Plexus can cause indecisiveness, fear of rejection and timidness, unregulated temper, aggression and tendency to be very judgemental, as well as problems with self-esteem and ego. Physically an imbalanced Manipura can result in disorders like diabetes, arthritis, stomach ulcers, intestinal issues, low blood pressure and problems of pancreas and the adrenal glands.

  • Anahata or the Heart Chakra: Represented by the element air and the colour green this chakra is located in the heart region, centre of the chest.

The seed Mantra of this chakra is YAM.

This chakra affects the functioning of heart, rib cage, blood circulatory system, lungs, breasts, shoulders, arms and hands. Anahata Chakra represents our ability to love and connect, have compassion and empathy alongwith having an optimistic outlook and also helps us feel complete, whole in ourselves.

An imbalance of the Heart Chakra can reflect in a person’s inability to deal with emotions and can also give rise to feelings like jealousy, anger, lack of trust, anxiety, hopelessness and mood variations. Physical symptoms of a blocked Anahata can result in heart conditions, asthma, lung diseases and problems related to thoracic spine and upper back.
