Chakras of the Human Body (Part 3): Vishuddha, Ajna and Sahasrara

In continuation of the chakras and how they govern the human body, we will be shedding light on the last three chakras leading to the topmost Crown Chakra.

  • Vishuddha or the Throat Chakra: Represented by the element of sound or ether and the colour blue this chakra is located in the throat area.

The seed Mantra of this Chakra is HAM.

This chakra influences our throat, thyroid, trachea, vocal cords, mouth, teeth, gums, arms, shoulders and hands. As the name suggests Vishuddha Chakra represents our ability to communicate. Traits such as faith, truthfulness, self-awareness and expression are governed by this chakra.

A weak or blocked Throat Chakra affects the ability to express, and also makes us indecisive. A lack of faith clubbed with a lack of creativity are also symptoms of a blocked Throat Chakra. Physically it can reflect in throat infections, mouth ulcers, laryngitis, thyroid malfunctions and gum and teeth problems as well.

  • Ajna or the Third Eye Chakra: Represented by the element of light and the colour indigo this chakra is located between the eyes and is also known as the “brow chakra”.

The seed Mantra for this chakra is Aum or Om.

The functions of the brain, eyes, ears, nose, pituitary glands and the neurological system are governed by this chakra. Ajna Chakra is responsible for our intellect, wisdom, clairvoyance, intuitive reasoning, insight and also implementation of ideas.

An imbalanced Third Eye Chakra can cause characteristics such as indiscipline, proneness to addictions, poor judgement and non-assertiveness. Physical problems like headaches, eyestrain, learning disabilities, hearing problems are a result of a weak Ajna Chakra since it governs our neurological system.

  • Sahasrara or the Crown Chakra: Represented by the element of conscience and the colour white or violet this chakra is locate at the very top of the head.

The seed Mantra for this Chakra is AUM or OM and Silence.

Brain, eyes and the entire nervous system are governed by this chakra. Sahasrara Chakra is considered as the chakra of enlightenment and spiritual awareness. The Crown Chakra helps us connect to our sense of purpose and influences the integration of mind-body-spirit. This one chakra is connected to all the chakras and therefore is also liked to all the organs of our body. Thoughtfulness and a feeling of union with the universe or the cosmic energy is the primary purpose of this chakra.

A blocked Crown Chakra can lead to a lot of materialism in one’s nature and also disbelief is spiritual practices or the One. Frustration, sadness and a lack of inspiration are all manifestations of an imbalanced Crown Chakra. Physical disorders of the nervous system are a result of a weak Sahasrara.

When the chakras or even one of them is blocked or its movement is hindered, the prana (life energy) gets stuck and the flow of energy is obstructed. Various Yoga postures and breathwork can help in releasing this stuck or stale energy from the body inviting fresh, vital energy back into the body. A teacher or practitioner of Chakras can also help in balancing these chakras with the help of various symbols, mantras, diagrams, deities and mandalas.
